Weekly Update October 20
Weekly Update - Friday, October 20, 2023
Good afternoon. We've had a great week of learning at Elbow Park School. In addition to our day to day work with student in classes, we had several opportunities to take our learning off-site.
Kindergarten trip to Calgary Farmyard - This week our Kindergarten class had an amazing experience at Calgary Farmyard. We learned about how animals at a farm are cared for by farmers. We got up close and personal with a variety of goat, sheep and pigs. We also met Deanna, the owner of Calgary Farmyard. She taught us about the life cycle of a pumpkin, from seed to vine, and all the way to Orange pumpkin. Did you know pumpkins are green before they turn orange?! So cool! Before we left, Mr. Daga got to pick the PERFECT pumpkin to take back to our classroom!

Gr 3/4 - walking field trip and Heritage Park - This week we started off our study of Alberta history with some amazing learning opportunities around the city. We started at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building to do sketching and ask questions about the area's history in connection to our work in Social Studies around Alberta’s histories. Our volunteer docent brought us through the building explaining the rich variety of historical pictures and artifacts within the house.
On October 19th at Heritage Park we looked at history through a combination of stories, artifact demonstrations, and activities that helped students learn about the ways of life among the Blackfoot confederacy, the voyageurs, and the Métis of Western Canada. Our Metis guide Janice tailored her personal stories and past learnings to the questions that the students were asking.
At the park, students also explore how automobile manufacturing was revolutionized by techniques developed by Henry Ford, they used knowledge from our simple machines unit to understand better how the conveyor belt system changed the way in which automobiles were built.
As a bonus in Gasoline Alley we got to explore and ask questions about the newest exhibit: The Original Terry Fox Van!

Gr 5/6 Outdoor School - Gr 5/6 Outdoor School - Oct 16-19 Grade 5/6 students went to Outdoor School at Camp Chief Hector. This was an engaging, challenging, and memorable experience for our oldest learners in the school. Camp life, three nights away from home, living with classmates and camp counsellors were just some of the aspects of the camp experience that provided such a stimulating learning experience. Please join me in extending a big thanks to our gr 5/6 teachers, Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. Odland, for all the preparation work and time away from home that this experience involved. Such a memorable event.
