Principal’s Message

In the last two weeks students have enjoyed a Flag Football residency in PE put on the by Calgary Flames Foundation. There were many coaches on the floor working with our students and the enjoyment level was high. Our students in grades 4-6 hosted MLA Kayande from Calgary Elbow and asked many excellent questions about the roles of provincial and federal government. They came to understand more about the election process including who is eligible to vote and how to become a politician. He spoke about the structure of the Alberta Legislature and how the number of seats won in an election determines the majority party.

We held our first meeting for grades 4-6 students to discuss our Centennial Time Capsule Landmark project. Students are being asked to create designs for a brick structure to be installed outside that will mark a time capsule for opening. In Music class, each grade is learning the songs for their part of the opera performance.

Coming up next week, we would like to welcome back Ms. Link in Grade 2-3 which means that we also are saying goodbye to Ms. K (Thurston). We want to thank her for taking this class over and being able to quickly build relationships with her students. We wish her well as she moves on to teach at another elementary school next week. We have also been very intentional this year to strengthen our community relationship with Rideau Park Junior High School. We are hosting their jazz band program for a concert on Thursday next week. This will hopefully inspire some of our current Grade 6 students to consider the band program as an option for next year.

School Council Elections

The minutes from our March 12 meeting have been posted. Notable points to review include queries for playground upgrade, Fall Fair/Spring Fling planning and elections for the executive (Chair, Vice Chair, Communications) are upcoming at the May 7 AGM (6:30 p.m.). If you want more information about these positions, please contact Mr. Fech at the school.
